How difficult is it to get into UMichigan?

The University of Michigan is a selective school with an admission rate of 18%. That percentage of students selected from an applicant pool of 87,632 during the 2023-24 admissions cycle had an average high school GPA of 3.9 and impressive standardized test scores to match. The SAT composite score (50th Percentile) was 1470 while the ACT composite score (50th Percentile) was 33.

What is the campus like at UMichigan?

The University of Michigan has more than 1,600 student organizations, and more than 30 student entrepreneur groups. With a plethora or organizations to become involved in, students can pursue any activity they want!

If you’re looking for a close-knit community, a large network of fraternity and sorority systems cater to different interests and identities. Greek life at the University of Michigan has a rich history, with the first sorority being chartered in 1879, and culturally based fraternal organizations chartered in the early 1900’s! For over 175 years, the Greek system has provided students with opportunities outside the classroom. Since then, the community has grown to over 5,500 students within 4 different councils.

In terms of housing, 97% of first year students live in residence halls at U-M. Once accepted to the university, you will receive the Michigan Housing application which asks for students preferences. The university does not guarantee that all preferences will be met, but they match you to students who they think you will live best with. Students do have the option to submit a specific roommate request.
In addition to regular dorms, the university has more than 10 learning communities and theme communities that allow students with similar interests to live and study together.

U-M has three different campus locations where students can live: Central Campus, North Campus, and the Hill, totaling 17 buildings. Students do have the option to live off campus and in apartments.

UMichigan Dining offers a variety of meal plan options to suit the needs of every student. Students in residence halls will have meal swipes to be used in the dining halls. In addition, students can have Dining Dollars which can be used like cash at more than two dozen locations across campus, such as pantries, cafes, markets, libraries, and university buildings. Those who live in a residence hall are required to have a meal plan for every term in residence.

What is UMichigan known for?

Does UMichigan have a good athletic department?

Since 1865, UMichigan has claimed over 50 national titles across 12 sports, demonstrating its legendary athletic prowess in sports such as basketball, football and ice hockey. Competing in the NCAA Division I, the Wolverines are consistently ranked among the top teams in their sports, ultimately cultivating an electric sense of school spirit throughout the campus and within alumni across generations. The school has over 900 student athletes and 415 all-time Big 10 athletic championships, and major historical rivals include Ohio State University, Notre Dame and Michigan State. Outside of the varsity level, the school also offers club, intramural and recreational athletics.

What are UMichigan’s core curriculum and programs?

U-M students can also choose intellectually rigorous and challenging Dual Degree Programs, and Individual Programs of Study.

UMichigan allows any student to take any class, even if they are not in that major or school. While this may seem extremely overwhelming, students can utilize U-M’s advising system for help! The 15:1 student to faculty ratio still allows for a more intimate learning environment.

The University of Michigan is ranked as the #1 public research university in the U.S. U-M has a very strong commitment to undergraduate research through the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP). The UROP is a year-long academic experience that engages first-year, second-year, and transfer students in research. In order to participate, undergraduates must conduct research on average 6-12 hours per week during the academic year, engage in research seminars every Tuesday, and attend monthly meetings with a UROP peer facilitator. The UROP is open to all students of any college. Overall, the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program has more than 1,500 undergraduate students involved in research partnerships with more than 800 research advisors.

U-M is also known for their study abroad programs. The University has more than 200 study abroad programs on 6 continents, and more than 600 global initiative sites. On campus, there are more than 65 foreign languages taught, helping the university to achieve its #9 ranking in the nation for students studying abroad.

Can I afford UMichigan?

For the 2023-2024 academic year, the total cost of attendance for in-state students is around $35,450 and $76,294 for out-of-state students. While this may seem like a steep price, Michigan is viewed as the #1 best value public school in the state, and is proud of their Go Blue Guarantee. This guarantee, first launched in 2018, offers free tuition for up to four years for in-state, full-time undergraduate students with family incomes of $65,000 or under and assets below $50,000. Two of three first-year students receive financial aid from the university, and one out of every four in-state undergraduates pay no tuition due to financial aid! In the 2020-21 academic year, the university awarded students more than $754.6m in scholarships and fellowships. Scholarships are awarded based on several criteria including academic achievement, personal talents, interests, leadership qualities, financial need, or a combination. For most scholarships, your application to U-M automatically serves as your application to those scholarships.
